Reviews - what our
Customers say about The Gurkha Spice
cuisine at it's best”
The most pleasant and humble
welcome from this strongly Buddhist influenced restaurant staff,
the décor is very 1920's at the waning of the British Raj, music
is traditional Nepalese and the atmosphere is warm and relaxed.
Then we had some food.... Oh. My. God!! Having worked with
Gurkhas in my past and enjoying their very traditional welcoming
meals, this took me straight back to being on operations!
It was so delicious and extremely authentic, a party in my
mouth! And the takeaway food is just as high a standard as the
restaurant served food, our new 'Indian Sub-continent'
restaurant of choice!
An excellent establishment, as it
tends to be quiet, so a relaxed meal is usually assured.
The service and food are excellent, and there's a big screen
that usually plays a variety of Nepalese and Indian tourist
videos to keep you mildly entertained.
The first meal I ordered got me hooked. Number 37: Lasooni Tikka,
is a selection of generously sized chicken pieces, coated in
special Nepalese yoghurt and spices, sizzling hot on a bed of
freshly fried onions.
Although it comes with basmati rice, I recommend a sweet naan to
contrast the flavours. Both times I've ordered it I've eaten
until i can hardly move, it really is a superb dish.
The staff are attentive and friendly, and i would recommend to
anyone in the Banbury area looking for a fresh taste of the
for a fantastic meal”
Originally went in for a take away
but ended up sitting in.
We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who not only took
time out to tell us about the food but also to tell us about
Nepal where the Gurkas are from.
We enjoyed fantastic food with very generous portions and the
Gurka beer is recommended.
The food is great value for money, although they don't really
have a dessert menu, but they did manage to come up with a
dessert for us from their country, which was small but very
Went here for lunch.
Our waiter was very attentive and friendly.
Our meals were delivered to the table hot and fresh from the
kitchen... well presented and delicious.
There's no other similar restaurant in Banbury with such service
or speciality in food choice.
I will definitely come back. Thank you :)
“Excellent location and mouth watering food.”
Fantastic restaurant with
delicious variety of food. I particularly liked King Prawn
Masala, Tandoori Sea Bass and Sweet Naan.
This is one of the finest meals I
have had, this place is a gem for Banbury.
The attention to detail is good, and staff very helpful.
Will be back
Great food with a smile. Very
impressed with the service received keep the good work up guys
hope to see you again soon
“Mountains of Food from the Gurkha”
Very attentive staff wanting to
make our meal as enjoyable as possible.
We came here for a mid-week birthday meal and we had a relaxed
dining experience with our own personal waiter and chef!
The food was very good indeed, and the prices were reasonable
Will definitely make a return trip as soon as possible.
“Very tasty lunch”
I visited with an Indian friend
for lunch. The lunch menu was simple and a good price.
The food was very nice with some lovely spicy flavours (not so
much chilli heat).
The service was good and my friend, who I know to be very
critical of food, thought it was excellent.
I will return for an evening meal
“Tasty food Great service”
A couple of us went to celebrate a
Birthday and as we had never tried Nepalese before we thought
we'd give it a go. I had the mo mo to start which are little
dough parcels with meat and a dipping sauce, that was spicy but
not too much.
For my main I had the Gurkha curry which was a bit different
from the Indian ones I'm used to, but still as delicious.
I couldn't manage a dessert.
Service was good and we had good banter with the waiter.
If you like Indian but want to be a bit different then you can
go wrong here.
“Brilliant Indian cuisine”
This was an old pub and
the layout has not changed but its a good combination with ice
cold beer and hot and spicy dishes. The food is amazing... And
the service was awesome. Would happily return to this restaurant
and will visit soon.
“Great food of
excellent quality, attentive staff”
Food is delicious here, choice of
Nepalese and Indian cuisine. The staff are very attentive to
your needs. The takeaway food is of equally good quality. Highly
We walked past this fantastic
place earlier and decided to look at the menu on the way back,
I'm glad we did as the food is beautiful.
We where greeted by our host and shown to a table and asked if
we would like to see the lunch menu.
A nice selection of food with a really good portion size. The
Himalayan lamb is very good.
Nice clean place and very well priced, will definitely be going
“Pleasant twist to
First visit to this Nepalese
restaurant in Banbury.
Nice to find Gurkha beer on the menu which tasted good. The menu
had a slightly different feel to a traditional Indian, with
Gurkha dishes as well as noodles plus the standard curry dishes.
Food tasted very good and service was good.
Would happily recommend this restaurant and will visit again.
“Try it, you will not be sorry”
All the usual curries, but lots of
different things to try as well. The owner is so helpful and
friendly. The food is beautiful. Be patient as all the food is
cooked from scratch.
"Good taste of Nepal”
A great find slightly off the beaten track in
Banbury. A good range of Nepalese dishes, and the khashi jhal
which I had was sublime. The service was impeccable and our
waiter made us feel very much at home. After having lunch there,
no way I was going to need to eat again that day! I can't
recommend it highly enough.
"My new favourite
I've had two meals now from Gurkha Spice, and they
were both amazing. One was delivered to my house, very quickly,
despite it being Friday night.
The tikka masala is the best I've ever tasted, I highly
recommend it! The dhaal fry and paneer dishes are also extremely
tasty. The naans are delicious too.
I don't usually leave reviews on TripAdvisor, but in this case I
really wanted to because it's rare to find a restaurant with
such tasty food, brilliant service, and whose staff are so kind
and friendly (owners, chefs, waiters and delivery staff).
The waiting staff greeted myself and my partner as
soon as we walked in the door. From that moment on it felt as
though they were doing everything possible to make us feel
valued and special.
The food absolutely blew me away. Much as I want to wax lyrical
in true foodie fashion, I really don't think I could do it justice. Suffice to say this was one one of the best curries
I've ever had and am genuinely excited to come back and try the
rest of the menu!
The waiting staff checked on us regularly enough to keep us
feeling valued but not so often it ruined the atmosphere. When
my partner didn't finish her curry (due to portion size) the
waiting staff really began to shine. They seemed mortified that
there might have been something wrong and (after assuring them
the food was awesome) we were left feeling as though nothing
would have been to much trouble.
- Staff are amazing.
- Definitely plan on eating here again!
I have come here many times and have never been
Very attentive staff, friendly and great timing between courses.
As someone who works in the restaurant trade I respect them for
their food and service, not many places in Banbury can hold a
candle to here.
Can't wait to come back.
We collected an excellent meal from Gurkha Spice.
Delicious food, competitively priced, ready within 30 mins.
Discount of 15% if you collect. A great range of dishes, some
Nepalese specials , some familiar Indian . Yummy!
“2nd visit as good as the 1st”
We took my London based brother and his wife along
this time and they were both impressed. In particular, the
starters we all shared were not only very different from the
usual first courses available in a Indian restaurant but all
absolutely delicious. The service from the owner, [who is from
Kathmandu], and his team was excellent and the prices of both
the food and drinks were exceptionally good value for money. Do
try the Nepalese specialities; you won't be disappointed. We
will be going back very soon.
“Excellent food, lovely service”
Great meal, and the owner couldn't do enough for
us... one of the best places to eat in Banbury. It was quiet for
a Friday night but it seems the new owner is trying to rebuild
the restaurant's reputation... he shouldn't have problem based
on tonight's standard.
“Great food and service”
Since the ownership changed in the last couple of
months the restaurant has improved significantly. If you were a
fan if the original Gurkha Spice why not give it a try again.
The food and service were very good.
“Great Nepalese Restaurant”
A quite large, pleasant restaurant, kept very clean. Plus
they serve Gurkha Beer.
The food was impressive. We both had Veg Momos which were very
flavourful & beautifully cooked. The dipping sauce is excellent
too & complimented the taste of the Momos well. Can't remember
the name of the Chicken main dish I had, but it was served on a
sizzling platter with onions & veg. The Chicken was spot on!
Very moist & succulent, with a chargrilled outer & a delicate
garlicky, spiced flavour. My fiancee had 2 veg dishes including
a Daal. Lovely, fragrant taste with good texture. Roti and Rice
were excellent too. Portion sizes are very generous (we took a
doggy bag home). Prices are very reasonable & they accept
Gourmet card too. Staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and
We will certainly be eating here again!
“Very impressive menu”
Called in to this place with a couple of mates for a meal
out. There is a very extensive menu, which includes all the
traditional Indian food, but a large Nepalise section is also on
We all chose from that part as we had not had that style before.
I had the Shangrilar chicken, very nice and mild, a good choice
for those that do not like it to spicy hot.
Staff very attentive but we were the only ones in. Would
definitely visit again.
"Amazing food, lovely family restaurant”
I just love coming here to eat, food is consistently
brilliant, staff are friendly and helpful. Lovely atmosphere,
great location. Restaurant is always clean. Will be back again
“Consistently Excellent Food”
I've eaten at Gurkha Spice many times and there are
lots of good points to highlight: excellent value lunch menu
starting at around £6.95 for a couple of courses; a wonderful
fusion of eastern flavours - wider in choice than most Indian
restaurants, and using more unusual ingredients.
The staff are attentive and welcoming.
My Nepalese friend visited from London and together we took
seven children (aged between 18mths and 14yrs) out for dinner!
The restaurant happily accommodated a variety of taste and spice
requirements and it was a great family experience.
“Amazing food with friendly staff.”
Variety of delicious cuisine.I would certainly
recommend this restaurant.
A Great team and lovely atmosphere.
Keep up the good work.
“From a regular ”
Gurkha Spice has a great selection, wide variety of
Nepalese and Indian food, with a very friendly staff.
I've been going here regularly for a year now, and it's
“Not your bog standard curry house”
Lovely place, great food - no greasy, freshly cooked
and plenty of choice.
Staff are attentive. We keep going back.
Please do try it, it is a cut above all other curry houses.
“Top class Nepalese and Indian food”
Delicious, fresh tasting food.
We have used this restaurant many times, sometimes in the
restaurant and often as a home delivery takeaway.
We have never been disappointed with the food, it is excellent
quality and reasonable prices.
“Food delicious and good value!!”
Myself and my partner order take-away's from this
restaurant quite often for delivery they always arrive on time
which is great.
The food is delicious and always full of flavour.
Number 1 Indian restaurant for food in Banbury for sure!!
“Great, authentic Nepalese food”
We were on our quest to find Nepalese restaurants and
struck gold when we dropped into Banbury.
Starting with a poppadom each – the pickle tray was lovely –
there was an exceptionally nice gently spiced tomato sauce,
along with a great dish of onions – with the regular mango
chutney and raita.
The restaurant has extra atmosphere by videos of Nepal on the
“Nepalese food in Banbury”
Once again we have never been disappointed with
eating or just going for a drink at the Gurkha Spice.
We are always greeted with a warm and friendly smile.
Just one time try Nepalese food you always want go again
“Fabulous food in a relaxed
We visited on New Years Eve and had such a lovely
evening with friends.
The restaurant was very quiet but the service was charming and
really enhanced our dining experience.
Our food was fabulous - my vegetable biryani was delicious!
It was all very relaxed and we had a most enjoyable time.
